QGA – For Type A Gas Approval Applications
The QGA facilitates gas approval applications for Type A Individual gas devices throughout Queensland. We carry out gas safety checks on Type A commercial and domestic appliances, and assist with the issuing of gas compliance certificates, on completion of the approval process.
Type A Gas Device Approvals
A Type A gas device is an appliance that runs on either natural gas or LP gas. These devices are typically mass-produced, have an appliance data plate and are mostly used in domestic or light commercial settings.
It’s important to note that, in Queensland, all Type A gas devices must be approved/ certified by the Chief Inspector, Petroleum and Gas, or by a person or body approved by the Chief Inspector. It is an offence under the Petroleum & Gas Act, to operate a Type A device without a Gas Safety Approval.
That’s where QGA comes in.
QGA’s role in gas approval applications
Gas safety awareness is at the core of everything we do. We assist and carry out gas approvals for individual Type A gas devices to ensure the safety of gas fitters and end users.
QGA has a step-by-step process in place for gas approval applications for individual or one-off devices being used in Queensland. Please note: Approvals made by QGA gas approvers have no legal standing in another state or territory, unless the QGA scheme is recognised by the technical regulator of that jurisdiction.
What is the Individual Type A Gas Device Approval Scheme?
The purpose of this scheme is to:
- Provide a cost-effective and practical pathway for approval
- Allow manufacturers and importers to produce or import one-off or low quantities of Type A gas devices
- Ensure an acceptable level of safety while still allowing for market testing and gas device/appliance design innovation without the financial burden of laboratory-based testing

What Type A gas devices QGA cannot approve
There are some devices that the assessment process is limited in establishing an acceptable level of safety for gas devices (appliances) that fall outside particular parameters.
Appliances that may provide a possible or perceived elevated level of risk are not deemed eligible to be assessed under the scheme. The elevated level of risk may be in relation to the design, construction, installation or use of a particular appliance, or due to complexity of controls or process they are beyond the scope of the test criteria.
This page lists appliances currently excluded from the scheme, and clarifies defining design requirements for other particular appliances to be considered eligible.
Any appliance using a fuel gas that is not of the fuel gas quality and characteristics prescribed for consumers within chapter 7 of the Petroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004
Due to the elevated risks associated with biogas, hydrogen and other substances prescribed as fuel gas appliances using any gas other than standardised LP Gas or Natural Gas are excluded from the scheme are to be considered and approved under a gas device (type B) approval scheme.
Appliances that are fuelled or include a fuel gas canister. Including but not limited to butane canister cookers (lunch box cookers), camping heaters, and canister lamps/lights
Safety related functions of this type of appliance can only be assured through rigorous laboratory testing. There is an elevated level of risk due to proximity of canister to heat source, reliability of shut-off and ejection systems. These appliances may be eligible under the nationally recognised type test scheme
Yum-Char Trolleys – mobile food cabinet, utilised for heating/warming food through a heating medium of water or oil, and include an LP Gas cylinder within the cabinet.
There is no current Australian Standard to which this style of appliance can be tested. Safety device requirements are not defined. There is an elevated level of risk due to the proximity of the appliance to the public in crowded spaces. The proximity of the LP gas cylinder to the heat source. The mobile nature of the appliance and spillage of heated liquids.
Gas air conditioners with the capacity to consume no more than 500MJ in an hour
There is no current Australian Standard to which this style of appliance can be tested. Safety device requirements are not defined. For more information contact gassafe@dnrme.qld.gov.au
Portable gas generators with the capacity to consume no more than 500MJ in an hour
There is no current Australian Standard to which this style of appliance can be tested. Safety device requirements are not defined. For more information contact gassafe@dnrme.qld.gov.au
Defined design requirements for eligibility
Particular gas devices may be defined as a gas device (Type A) or a gas device (Type B) dependent on the energy rating and/or other complexities, such as controls and other process requirements.
- Appliance burner operating pressure not exceeding;
- LP Gas 2.75 kPa; or
- NAT- 1.00 kPa
- Maximum gas consumption not exceeding 150mj/hr
- Atmospheric burners only as defined in AS5263.0
- Burner management system to be certified to Australian requirements
- Flame supervision system to be
- Thermocouple; or
- Flame rectification/ionisation.
- Natural draft or power flue as defined in AS5263.0
- All gas components to comply with Australian requirements
Note 1: Where the coffee roasting process and/or flue system includes an 'after burner' as part of the process the appliance is not eligible to be assessed under the scheme.
Note 2: Where the above criteria is not met the appliance must not be approved under the scheme and is to be considered a gas device (Type B).
Note 3: Where there is any doubt or lack of clarity the approval application must be considered in consultation with the Chief Inspector or delegate.
Important information about applying for a gas approval
Before starting your application, please read the following IMPORTANT information
- A non-refundable application fee of $165 (including GST) for each appliance is payable to QGA when submitting your application form.
- Online payment is the preferred method as it expedites the application process. Alternatively, payment can be made electronically into our bank account – see invoice for details.
- PLEASE NOTE: Gas approval fees will be charged directly by the Certifier, costs can vary depending on a variety of factors. The Certifier should provide you with a cost estimate before proceeding with the Gas Safety Approval.
- Your application cannot be processed until all fields on the form are completed.
- Our Administration Department will endeavour to contact you within 2-3 business days of receiving your application and payment of the application fee.
Should you require assistance in completing the application, please call Administration on 1300 792 239.
Our gas approval application process
QGA has a simple 8-step application process for gas certification.
- Engage a local gas fitter to prepare/check the gas device and ensure it is brought up to Australian standards. The gas fitter will then cap it off/switch off the gas device until the gas safety test has been carried out by a Certifier.
- Complete the online application form including: Customer Details, Application Details, Specifications and Checklist. You will need to upload 3 photos:
-
- A photo of the complete gas device
- A photo of the appliance data plate and
- A photo of the front cover of the manual
- You also need to ensure, if there are any electrical components to the gas device, that it has been test and tagged or has an electrical safety certificate
- Check all information is completed on the application and ensure to upload the photos as requested of the gas device. Please also ensure you have read and tick the QGA Declaration box, then submit the application along with your payment
- An invoice for the application fee of $165 (including GST) will be issued to you
- Once payment is received by QGA, your application will be assigned to a Certifier, who will contact you to discuss time, date and their costs to complete the gas safety test
- Once your gas device passes the gas safety test, the Certifier will put a QGA badge on the device and the information will be uploaded to the QGA compliance register
- Your gas fitter will then issue you with a Gas Compliance Certificate
